We are the Michigan Law Headnotes, the University of Michigan Law School's only co-ed a cappella singing group.

Law school is hard. Singing is fun. So twice a week, the Headnotes get together to sing instead of do law school things.

The Headnotes love sharing our music with the law school so we host concerts for our fellow law students at the end of every semester. We perform at the Culture Show in fall and we host "Valograms" in February to help raise money for Student Funded Fellowships, a fund which provides grants to 1Ls pursuing summer jobs in the public interest. We also sing at the law school graduation ceremonies and other school-related events.

The Headnotes learn and perform between 8 and 10 songs every semester. We choose our repertoire through a group voting process. No genre is off limits. If the group votes for it, we'll sing it. All of the music performed by the group is arranged by Headnotes. The group is co-ed and comprised of anywhere between 12 and 22 group members from across all law school grade levels, including LLMs.

Our members come from a variety of musical backgrounds. Some of us have undergraduate or graduate degrees in music-related fields; others participated in musical theatre or sang in an a cappella group in college. For a few of us, our singing experience was limited to the walls of the shower until we joined the group. The one thing that we all have in common is that we all love to sing! If you are a current or soon-to-be Michigan Law student and you share our love for music, we encourage you to audition for the group. To learn more about the audition process, click here.
